Rancho Cucamonga is a suburban city that is found in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in San Bernardino County in California. The city’s population was estimated of 174,305 in 2014.  The city is located 37 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles.

In 2006, Money magazine ranked Rancho Cucamonga the 42nd on its ‘Best Places to Live.’ In addition to this, Insider Magazine published that Rancho Cucamonga’s neighborhood is the 13th richest neighborhood in Southern California.

Brief History

The original people to live in Rancho Cucamonga were the Native Americans according to recorded early history.

The city derives its name from the native name ‘kukamonga’ which means ‘sandy place.’ It has been established that this cluster of early settlers belonged to the Gabrielino culture. They were at some point the largest group of Native Americans in the North America continent.

In the 18th century, an expedition led by Gasper de Portola incorporated the land into the mission system. Father Junipero Serra established this together with his crew and the monks from the Franciscan congregation.

From there onwards, the town grew rapidly up to date. The town prospered through agriculture which included olives, peaches, citrus and most conspicuously the vineyards.

Climate

The city experiences an average of 287 days that are sunny in a year. Its climate is therefore classified as warm meridian. This influences its rich agricultural history which influences the wine-making in the area.

Demographics

The population density was 4,145.2 people per square mile (1,600.5/km²). The racial makeup of Rancho Cucamonga was 102,401 (62.0%) White (42.7% Non-Hispanic White), 15,246 (9.2%) African American, 1,134 (0.7%) Native American, 17,208 (10.4%) Asian, 443 (0.3%) Pacific Islander, 19,878 (12.0%) from other races, and 8,959 (5.4%) from two or more races.

There were 57,688 residents of Hispanic or Latino ancestry, of any race (34.9%) The city’s population is roughly 174,305 as of 2014. This is a 36% increase since the year 2000.

Businesses and Economy

Even though most of the city’s area is mostly for residential purposes, Rancho Cucamonga is the main center for logistics industry in Southern California.

The city’s closeness to major transportation hubs, highways, railways, and airports has influenced the growth of business. Corporations such as Coca-Cola, Frito-Lay, Amphaster Pharmaceuticals and Nong Shim have set up their bases here.

The area hosts office parks and shopping strips, a good example being the Terra Vista Town Center and the Ontario Mills.

Furthermore, the city is home to Tamco Steel. They run the only mini-steel mill in California. They deal with the recycling of ferrous scrap which includes junked cars and appliances to come up with rebar.

Social Amenities

The City is home to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. They host their games at the LoanMart Field, which is a minor-league baseball stadium.

The City also has the Victoria Gardens lifestyle center. It brings out the element of a more urban and traditional town design to what had been historically a suburban city.

Rancho Cucamonga has various K-12 schools. They operate in many school districts within its borders.

The city also boasts of two public libraries, which have a combined total of 200,000 volumes.

Transportation is not a problem because the city is served by Omni trains bus service, Metrolink train service and the nearby Ontario International Airport. The roads are also in good condition.

Money Magazine listed the city of Rancho Cucamonga as the 42nd on its “Best Place to Live” in the 2006 edition.

The Insider Magazine also established that the city’s neighborhood was the 13th richest neighborhood in the southern part of California.

Moreover, the city’s four public schools were awarded the silver distinction in a 2015 ranking of the country’s high schools by the United States News and World Report.
